In every sort of outdoor space, garden ornaments and decorations can add some fun and extra personality. We share ideas and inspiration here.
  • The opportunity to express yourself in the garden, choosing ornaments or decorations that can bring joy when you see them
  • You could connect with others, either by showing what you've added, or by choosing items together
  • Ornaments and decorations are visible all year round, adding interest to the garden even when most plants are dormant

The wonderful thing about adding ornaments and decorations to your garden is just how varied the options are. For very little money, you could add a small wind chime to a tree or balcony - or even make your own. Or, if you have a large space and wanted to splash out, there are amazingly grand statues that can make a real impact.

My garden is an expression of who I am.

Whatever you choose, you have the chance to express your personality and creativity, whilst making your garden memorable for yourself and visitors.

Garden ornaments and decorations can be very appealing for children too, particularly living creatures. You could ask young people in the family to help choose, or simply invite them to visit any characters you bring into your garden.

Garden Statues

Garden statues can add texture, character and charm to your garden. Depending on your choice, they can also help create a natural, calm and serene environment.

There are a vast array of garden statues available, in materials including stone and metal. You can find statues shaped as animals, people, mythical creatures, abstract shapes and much more.

Most garden centres will have a selection of garden statues. There are also a vast number of online retailers, including specialists in garden statue design.

Bird baths

Garden ornaments can be practical as well as attractive. Bird baths are an oasis for birds and also attract butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects.

There are many versions of bird baths available, from shallow troughs on a raised platform to ornate ones with water features.

Plant markers

You can remind yourself what you've planted and where with a simple lollipop and pen method. Or, you could add something more decorative. Examples include:

  • Painted garden stones
  • Metal herb markers
  • Laminated plant images
  • Decorated spoons

If you are doing your own painting, acrylic paint is ideal as it’s weather resistant, permanent and widely available.

Bug Hotel

Bug hotels are great for attracting wildlife. You can also get creative and make them a real talking point in your garden.

You can make a bug hotel any size or shape. They can be positioned in a quiet corner, or high on a wall. For a very simple version, follow our guide to making a bug hotel.

Garden Mirrors

We use mirrors for our own reflections, but they are also fantastic at reflecting back everything in their path. In the garden, a well-placed mirror can make the space look bigger and allow you to enjoy the plants from different angles. They can be brilliant for bringing life to a plain brick wall or fence.

You can use any sort of mirror in the garden, but those designed specifically for outdoor use are likely to last longer than ones that are not.

Garden Gnomes

It wouldn't be right to miss out garden gnomes. With designs that range from the understated to the outlandish, they are a fun and easy way to add personality to your outdoor space.

A garden gnome placed in the right spot can also highlight certain features of your garden. For instance, a garden gnome with a wheelbarrow is sure to draw attention to your favourite flower bed, while a gnome with a fishing rod can liven up a pond or water feature.

You could even have one gnome per person in your household which you can choose, name and place in your garden individually.

Other ornaments
