Finding calm and confidence in nature

Planting a seed and seeing it grow has helped Lisa to sow a new lease of life through gardening.

Lisa is autistic and uses nature as a safe space to withdraw to when she feels overloaded. She loves gardening with us, where she can interact with others and be outside among plants and trees and listening to bird song.

When I go home, I am in a lot better place than when I come in,

says Lisa

Since attending our general gardening programme, we have seen a big change in Lisa’s mental health, social skills and confidence. At first, she was nervous and didn’t want to talk to people. Now, she takes part in group projects and brings her passions for art into her work, taking photos and sharing her journal entries.

It can be very hard to talk to people when your interpersonal skills are not very strong. But coming here has given me the confidence to have conversations with other people and ask them how they are.

For Lisa, coming to our garden and experiencing the benefits of gardening was a turning point that improved her wellbeing.

I would say to anyone, being outside in nature even if you can only do five minutes a day, is the best thing for your head you can possibly do,

says Lisa

Today, Lisa is excited to be completing an RHS qualification, something she never thought she would do.

Our programmes provide safe, supportive spaces where people can transform their lives through gardening, just like Lisa did.
