This course provides the key skills set for Social and Therapeutic Horticulture (STH) Practice and considers the fundamental approaches and role of the practitioner in different settings and working with different groups of people.

The course explores the underlying principles of STH and covers content that helps you to maximise the value and benefits of STH. It takes a deep dive into how to develop a STH programme using an outcome-centred approach and you will learn how to develop sessions through a deeper understanding of horticulture activities and the different factors that influence practice choices.

We provide you with engaging learning material for you to work through in your own time combined with live events where learners can interact with each other and course tutors.

This course is suitable for:

Anyone who wants to understand how to use STH with different client groups. It is best suited for individuals who have either completed the ‘Introduction to STH Practice’ course or who have a basic knowledge of STH.

What you will learn:

  • How to build persuasive argument for using STH with different client groups to support funding, budget building and gain referrals
  • The underlying theory and mechanisms behind the benefits of STH
  • How to use different models and reasoning processes to manage sessions and practice effectively, overcoming challenges and barriers
  • How to analyse plant properties to understand their value in STH
  • Understanding different types of garden for health and wellbeing and how Attention Restoration Theory provides an evidence-based framework to create therapeutic gardens
  • How to evaluate a garden's accessibility and compatibility for different groups
  • How assessment can enable safe and effective practice and how different stages of the assessment process are better suited to gain different and necessary information
  • How to develop a STH programme using an outcome-centred approach, turning STH from a garden-led process into a client-led one

Format

This is a blended course, held over 2 weeks with flexible access to all learning materials and staggered live event times to accommodate different learner's commitments to home and work. The schedule can be viewed here (STH Practice Course Schedule). Please note that the number of scheduled live events may be reduced subject to numbers of people on the course.

10-14 hours learning time is required for each week including the live events.
