Dementia group trunkwell 006
A free two week online blended course for care settings in the South West of England - commencing 11th November 2022

Gardening has never been so important as it is today. Many people living with dementia haven’t been able to have regular contact with their love ones over the past year or so, gardening can be a meaningful activity as well as being a great distraction from the current situation.

Kindly funded by 'Remembering Not To Forget', this course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to develop therapy programmes to promote health, well-being and memory.

This course takes place online from 11th - 25th November 2022 and provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to develop therapy programmes to promote health, well-being and memory.

It will address the following key concepts:

  • Maximising the use of gardening for health and wellbeing.
  • Practical considerations for integrating access to nature in care settings.
  • Knowing people to support them in gardens (including functional assessment, dementia
    and gardens).
  • Basics of Horticulture to support access to gardens
  • Deepening our understanding of nature based activities, including activity analysis, barriers for people with dementia, and wider activities in gardens.
  • Developing gardens within care settings.

The course will provide a framework for enabling people with dementia to have greater advocacy and choice in relation to the outdoors and nature-based activities and will be a combination of online learning and live events through Zoom.

It will be held over two weeks with flexible access to all learning materials and staggered live event times to accommodate different learner's commitments to home and work.

There will be 6-10 hours learning time required for each week including the live events.

Places are limited so we are offering up to three free places per care setting. Please contact training@thrive.org.uk with any questions about the course.
