We launched ‘Growth Point’ a new CPD Subscription Service as essential further learning for those in the STH sector who want to stay ahead in their practice.
The first in a series of online sessions, where leaders in STH and experts in health, education and environmental sectors explore best practices, emerging trends and shared real-life experiences and challenges, went live in July.
A
supportive community of peers came together to hear Dr Carly Wood kick off
with a fascinating exploration of the value of research in STH provision,
highlighting the importance of evidence-based practice. Dr Carly Wood is
Director of Impact and Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science at the
University of Essex and Director of the Health, Exercise and Active Lifestyle
Research Group. While talking about the evidence, she said,
It is essential for STH practitioners to stay abreast of the scientific evidence regarding the benefits and barriers to STH as this will inform and support use of evidence-based practice and optimisation of outcomes for STH participants.
Dr Carly Wood was followed by Jo Bellamore, a neuro specialised nurse with over 20 years’ experience working in acute neurological, medical, surgical and rehabilitation wards, around south London and Surrey. Jo shared powerful insights from her work as a nurse and with the Brain and Spine Foundation, drawing meaningful connections between lived experience and therapeutic gardening practice.
Following the insightful speakers, an expert led workshop gave opportunity to ask questions surrounding challenges of practice. The engaging conversation covered motivating people and introducing new activities, designing gardens to support people with mental health conditions, saying the right thing to client gardeners and how to deal with disruptive behaviour.
After facilitating the first live session, Mark Emery, our Training and Education Officer said, “Participants came away buzzing with ideas, having had the chance to ask questions, share stories, and reflect deeply on their own experiences. The session did not just inform, it inspired. Whether you are a Thrive Award or Diploma graduate, a health, social care, or education professional, or simply passionate about nature-based interventions, this is your gateway to continuous learning, connection and professional growth.”
As well as the facilitated online sessions, Growth Point provides opportunity for discussion, presentations and learning updates from across horticulture, health, education and environmental fields.
A full recording of Growth Point’s July session is available to all subscribers, with the next live session taking place in October 2025.
