We were delighted that in 2014 the final display garden was completed at our Beech Hill centre with the opening of the Just for Fun Garden.
This garden was created for children and young people with special educational needs.
Research shows that children and young people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are better able to concentrate following contact with nature. The more contact children have with the natural environment and the more positive their experiences of it, the higher they score in tests of concentration and self discipline. Learning outdoors re-engages the child with the joy of learning and awakens curiosity.
The garden has been designed to use the natural environment to stimulate the faculties of sight, smell, taste, touch and sound There is also the planting of herbs and vegetables to give the children the opportunity to harvest and cook.
In addition to the water feature, a rill, has been included in the design to give the children an opportunity to enjoy water play, either paddling or playing 'Pooh sticks’.
The landscaping provides an area to enjoy games and the zig zag path provides an alternative to hop scotch.
