In this guide we will look at how you can grow plants inside of your very own pumpkin!

  • Rosemary

  • 'Cork Screw Rush' - Juncus effuses
  • 'Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick' Corylus avellana
  • 'Golden Variegated Sweet Flag' - Acorus gramineus
  • Pumpkin
  • Knife (supervision required for children)
  • Large spoon (or equivalent to dig out pumpkin seeds)
  • Screwdriver (or similar)
  • Potting soil
  • Planting pot (optional)

To make a pumpkin planter, you can use any pumpkin of any size. However, rounder pumpkins with a flat bottom will make it easier to plant inside.

If you have already hollowed your pumpkin, you can skip to step 3.

  1. Cut off the crown (top couple of inches) of your pumpkin and put it to one side. Make sure there is enough space for the base of your plant to fit inside
  2. Use a large spoon to take the innards out of the pumpkin. You can make use of the seeds by cooking them if you wish to
  3. Use a screwdriver or similar object to create 3-5 small drainage holes for drainage in the bottom of the pumpkin. Space out the holes so that excess water can run out, preventing the roots from being overwatered
  4. Put a couple of scoops of potting soil in the base of the pumpkin
  5. Gently place your plants into the soil inside the pumpkin, then add more soil to fill in the area around the plant.
  6. Water the suitable amount for the plant you have placed in the pumpkin

Once the pumpkin inevitably decomposes, you can take the plants out and them in another suitable pot or planting container.

There are a couple of alternative methods you can try. Firstly you can place the plants inside a pot and put the pot inside of the pumpkin. Secondly you can place the pumpkin planter on a planting bed, so that when it decomposes the plants will already have a bed ready for them underneath.
