Horticulture and gardening have been used over a long period as an activity and occupation within prisons and secure psychiatric hospital units. However, little has been written about their potential value and benefits.

In 2002, Thrive commissioned the first review and investigation into the issues facing social and therapeutic horticultural projects operating in secure settings.

Written by the Centre for Crime and Justice Studies, this report reviews international literature and highlights the findings of a survey of horticultural programmes operating in various secure settings within the UK.
