Thrive is a national charity whose mission is to research, educate and promote the use and advantages of gardening for people with a disability.

Our plans for the redevelopment

The plans for the new buildings and up to date facilities at the Thrive Battersea Garden Project were shown to the general public in an exhibition in Battersea Park’s staff yard from 14 April to 2 May 2008. This was part of a public consultation process from which we also collected feedback on the redevelopment through an online questionnaire.

Our redevelopment plans are scheduled over three years and work started in May 2008 with the refurbishment of the Herb Garden and the building of a new glasshouse. The plans will be phased to allow us to continue working with disabled gardeners while the redevelopment progresses. The main priorities are to redesign the gardens to give larger planting and working areas, and to rebuild our indoor work areas to give pleasant and up to date facilities.

The redevelopment affects two areas used by Thrive in Battersea Park - the Herb Garden and Main Garden. This image shows the design for the building planned for the Main Garden.

Work in the Herb Garden is almost complete and the gardens have been refurbished and are being worked in by Thrive's disabled gardeners. The fabulous Victorian-style greenhouse was purchased and installed with support from Alitex and the Western Riverside Environment Fund. We are curently refurbishing an old workshop located in the Herb Garden to provide training and work facilities.

We hope to start redeveloping our main garden, near the Battersea Park sports stadium in the near future.

When complete, this redevelopment will allows us to:

  • Help 250 disabled people every year – that’s more than five times as many people as we can today.
  • Reach a total of 2,500 disabled people though our community outreach work – that’s an incredible 10 times as many people as we reach today.
  • Launch new and ground breaking gardening programmes to meet the urgent need in our local community and in surrounding inner city communities.
  • Demonstrate to London’s decision makers, health and education professionals, and the general public, the benefits and positive results that our work can bring.
