Thrive is a national charity whose mission is to research, educate and promote the use and advantages of gardening for people with a disability.

Using the garden to support people with dementia

10/04/2007

2nd May at Thrive National OfficeNr Reading.

Thrive's gardening programme for people with dementia was developed during 2006 and is designed to encourage physical activity, invite social interaction on a 1:1 basis and in a group and provide opportunities for achievement, reminiscence and enjoyment.

This new training day has been put together as a result of findings from a project set up between Thrive and the West Berkshire branch of the Alzheimer's Society. Carers report that the benefits of gardening sessions extended beyond the session itself. Increased confidence is widely noted, gardening becomes a topic of conversation and some individuals even start to garden again.

This day is aimed at occupational therapists, activity co-ordinators, care staff and carers who support individuals with dementia. The day will be a combination of lecture and practical sessions, and attendees will be encouraged to participate in some practical gardening activity.

By the end of the day participants will have looked at:
· Design considerations
· How to plan a gardening programme (including plants and equipment)
· Prepare an activity and monitor the outcome of the activity
· How to involve volunteers and family

Course times 9.30 arrive for a 10.00 start and 4.30 finish
Cost £85 Thrive members, £120 non members
