Thrive awarded significant funding by the Big Lottery Fund to continue the National Blind Gardeners' Club

11/06/2007

We are delighted to report that the Big Lottery Fund’s Reaching Communities programme has awarded us a grant to continue our work with visually impaired people. Our National Blind Gardeners’ Club encourages the blind and partially sighted to continue gardening and helps them reap the associated health benefits.

The award will allow us to continue to produce Come Gardening, a multi-format gardening magazine, published quarterly, offering a variety of seasonal tips and techniques to blind people. We will also be able to reach visually impaired people across the country through a series of road shows and gardening weekends, which will give practical information and advice. These events will also help reduce the isolation often felt by the visually impaired and offer ways that they can improve their fitness, confidence and independence.

Tim Spurgeon, Head of Services at Thrive, said: “100 people a day are diagnosed with serious sight loss and many of these will give up gardening as a result. We want to make sure that people get information early enough after diagnosis so that they can carry on gardening and use it not only to help cope with their loss of sight but also to improve their mental and physical health.”
