Charity set to bloom at the Chelsea Flower Show
30/03/2010
Horticultural therapy charity Thrive has been selected to create a special garden at the world's most famous horticultural show and is offering readers a chance to win two tickets for the show on 26th May and a behind-the-scenes tour with Royal Horticultural Society judge and garden designer Andrew Fisher Tomlin.
With garden projects in Reading and London's Battersea Park, Thrive was set up in 1978 to help disabled people improve their quality of life through horticultural therapy as well as offering practical solutions to help people all over the country rebuild their lives after an accident or illness.
The Unexpected Gardener is a small urban garden designed in conjunction with award-winning designer Jo Thompson and shows how age or disability need not mean the end to gardening, with useful features such as raised planting beds for easy access, cleverly designed support structures and non-slip flooring as well a stunning range of colourful flowers and aromatic herbs grown by Thrive clients.
Commented designer Jo Thompson: "I was inspired to create this garden after seeing so many people with a wide range of disabilities working at Thrive. I began to wonder what compromises I would need to make as a more mature gardener and realised the importance of an outdoor space which is manageable whilst remaining stylish and contemporary."
