Thrive is a national charity whose mission is to research, educate and promote the use and advantages of gardening for people with a disability.

Gardening as part of stroke rehabilitation

Thrive is seeking funding to carry out a 4 year study to find out whether STH can improve the outcomes for people who have had a stroke and their care givers.

The study will invite people who have just been discharged from hospital after their first stroke and people who had a stroke some time ago to take part in a 12 week gardening programme.

The idea for this research project came from the feedback we got from members of six Stroke Clubs in SE England who had taken part in 1-hour practical 'table-top’ gardening sessions. They reported they had found the 'hands on’ experience motivating, a challenge to their perceptions of what they could do and some even maintained it had led to improved balance and walking.

These findings have been endorsed by the reported experiences of other stroke survivors working at Thrive or helping Thrive to design our 'Just 30’ gardening guide for people who have had a stroke or have heart disease.
