Before his illness affected him, Bob was an avid and accomplished canoeist. He had completed (at the time) one of the fastest double crossings of the English Channel.
However, Bob had experienced a long term illness which had affected his life greatly.
Bob reflected on his illness: he found that motivation was very difficult; he did not enjoy in-patient treatment although his condition responded well to it..
Bob felt he lacked meaningful activity and the motivation to join new activities.
He found himself having to live day to day, it had become difficult to plan ahead.
Being retired had been difficult because of no routine or daily structure.
Bob joined the Growing 4 Life conservation project at The Vyne National Trust estate, Hampshire. He participated in weekly sessions. Work included rhododrendron control, removal of sycamore saplings, path clearance and other tasks. This was to make the woodlands more accessible and enjoyable for visitors and to improve biodiversity.
As a result of his participation, Bob was able to recover confidence and motivation to continue with other activities.
Bob said of his participation on Growing 4 Life:
"I particularly enjoyed rhododendron removal and the review sessions as it has given me the opportunity to talk to Carl (Project officer) about the project and other areas of life."
"It has really boosted my confidence and motivation and has given me the confidence to join other projects and courses. I now volunteer at an allotment project, participate in Walk for health (Basingstoke Borough Council) and attend Basingstoke College of Technology (English Course)"
"I have also been able to return to canoeing since joining Thrive due to better levels of motivation."
